The First Step

When I started writing SINON OF KIRRA, I had no idea where it would take me. I just knew that I wanted to write a story in ancient Greece. I looked through lists of ancient Greek names (male and female), and chose Sinon. I wanted the story to be a coming of age story and I wanted to deal with gender equity and racial justice. Mentu provided the opportunities for the latter. I dabbled with gender equity in SINON OF KIRRA and a little in MENTU THE NUBIAN, but it became a primary focus in ANISSI. Little did I know when I started SINON, that it would become a series. I also learned to let my characters take me on their journey. They developed so clearly in my mind that I could see and hear them as I wrote. I know now that I am a pantser, despite starting as and trying to be a planner. The stories defied an outline, so when I write now, I sit down and write something, anything to make the first step and then I just hang on for the ride.
